His technique and the controversy at his time
His works were subject of much controversy among the artists of that time. For instance, his works were questioned because he painted very low horizons, almost at a sixth part of the picture height. He argued that the horizons were low, very low. One only has to watch the rich landscape of the pampas to agree with him.
His drawings showing horses with their four legs in the air were another controversial subject. He was deeply criticized for that. He claimed that he painted what he saw. Some years later, when motion pictures improved their techniques, it could be observed that there is a moment when back legs surpass front legs and the horse is not touching the ground.
Molina Campos was certainly an acute observer and had a unique photographic memory. It is worth mentioning that as a result of his detailed pictures, his works are accepted as a reference for those who have to “emprendar” (saddle) a horse. Moreover, the jury at this discipline admits the use of “pilchas” (clothes) when someone who wears them refer back to his paintings.
